If you’ve never driven on the left-hand side of the road before — be prepared, as all driving is on the left-hand side in Australia. Guide on hiring a campervan in Australia

For those visiting from overseas, what you might know as an “RV” or “motorhome” is commonly known as a campervan in Australia. In the industry, a “berth” refers to how many people can sleep on board comfortably — so this means a six-berth campervan can sleep six. It is important to note how many seat belts come with your campervan as the law requires all passengers to be wearing a seatbelt when driving.

Today’s campervans range in size, design and have a variety of facilities. Rental companies can offer you vehicles that sleep up to six people, with various extras including a microwave, gas stove, grill, refrigerator and reverse cycle air-conditioning.

Regardless of where you are driving your campervan in Australia, there are three types of camping spots to choose from: rest areas, state campgrounds and normal campgrounds. If you have a tight budget, look for rest areas — also known as free campgrounds. If you prefer to camp more comfortably, choose either state campgrounds or normal campsites.

Some of the things you need to consider before renting a campervan are age and licence requirements.
