While all roads may seem to lead to Sydney, the capital of New South Wales, the good news is that all the roads lead out of it too. This makes the very popular city an excellent base for — or stopover on — road trips right across the state.
For those not looking to rack up hundreds of kilometres, Sydney and its immediate surrounds make for some excellent day trips, and there are also some terrific camping getaways within an easy drive of the city. A little more driving time could take you to the famous Blue Mountains, a destination that is absolutely worth a weekend if you have the time.
New South Wales is a large state (though not Australia’s largest), which means you don’t need to limit yourself to considering Sydney as the base for your road trips. On the north coast, both Newcastle and particularly Byron Bay offer scenic drives, in fact the whole New South Wales coastline is perfect for a long and well-paced family road trip.
Want to really put some rubber to the road? What about a road trip from Sydney to Melbourne or Sydney to Brisbane? Better still, do both!
