Australia’s largest state, Western Australia is where things are at if your idea of a perfect road trip involves plenty of driving. Along with the driving, you’ll get to enjoy an amazing coastline, a striking interior, fine wine and a cosmopolitan capital city — Perth.
The state capital, set towards the southwest corner of the state, is the perfect launching point for a road trip to Margaret River. The state’s prime wine-growing region, it also boasts fantastic surf, beautiful beaches and some outstanding cuisine to go with the wine you’re sampling. Once there, with a few more days you could continue east to Esperance, along the way visiting Rottnest Island, national parks, and yes, more wineries.
If all that sounds like a few too many kilometres for a fun road trip, Avon Valley National Park is far closer to Perth and well worth the drive.
